Getting started with CounselCue for your class · Last updated April 2026

1. Welcome

CounselCue is a real-time AI legal research assistant. Your instructor has given you access through your school's institutional account. This guide will help you get started.

2. Creating Your Account

Click the invite link from your instructor (check your email or your school's LMS). You'll be taken to a registration page. Create an account with your name and email, or sign in with Google or Microsoft. Your account is automatically connected to your institution — no code or payment needed.

3. Starting a Session

Go to counsel-cue.com/session (or bookmark it). You'll see a Session Type dropdown and two buttons:

Session Type — Choose between "Lecture / Class" (the default, best for classroom use) and "Study Session" (for independent review and study groups). Student accounts are designed specifically for educational use, so you'll see these two modes tailored to how students learn.
🎤 Start — Click this to listen through your laptop microphone. Use this in class, during study sessions, or while reviewing notes.
🖥 Join Virtual Meeting — Click this to capture audio from Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams (for virtual classes).

That's it — CounselCue starts listening and analyzing immediately.

4. How It Works in Class

Open CounselCue on your laptop before class starts. Make sure "Lecture / Class" is selected in the Session Type dropdown, then click "Start." As your professor lectures, analysis cards appear in real time with relevant statutes, case law, and key legal concepts. You don't need to do anything — just let it listen.

5. Understanding Analysis Cards

Each card contains:

A topic header (the legal concept detected)
Relevant statutes with citations
Related case law
Key points and suggested questions
A confidence badge (how relevant the card is to the discussion)

Cards update as the conversation progresses. New cards appear as new topics come up.

6. Downloading Your Notes

When class ends (or anytime during), look at the footer bar at the bottom of the screen:

Each card has a checkbox — check the cards you want to keep
Click "Download" to save your selected cards as a Word document (.docx)
The document includes all cited statutes and case law — ready for studying

Tip: Cards with 80%+ confidence are auto-checked, but you can uncheck ones that aren't relevant.

7. Your Usage Limit

Your institution plan includes 10 hours per month of session time. The usage meter at the top of the session page shows how much time you've used. When you reach 10 hours, you won't be able to start new sessions until the next month. Budget about 2-3 lectures per week and you'll stay well within the limit.

8. Using It for Study Sessions

Switch the Session Type dropdown to "Study Session" for independent study. CounselCue isn't just for lectures — you can also:

Click "Start" and read case briefs aloud — cards will surface related statutes and cases
Use it during study groups (set your laptop in the middle)
Run mock client interviews or moot court practice
Review class recordings by playing them through your speakers

9. Privacy & Audio

CounselCue does NOT record or store any audio. Audio is processed in real time and discarded immediately. No recordings are saved on any server. Your professor and classmates' voices are never retained. For full details, see the Privacy Policy at counsel-cue.com/privacy.

10. Troubleshooting

Microphone not working? — Make sure your browser has microphone permission. Click the lock icon next to the URL and allow microphone access.
No cards appearing? — Speak clearly and make sure your microphone is picking up audio. Check that the status bar shows "Listening..."
"Usage limit reached"? — You've used your 10 hours for the month. It resets on the 1st. Contact your instructor if you need more time.
Best browser? — Chrome is recommended. Safari and Firefox also work.
